What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety in West Greenwich is a normal emotion. It’s your brain’s way of reacting to stress and alerting you of potential danger ahead. Everyone feels anxious now and then. For example, you may worry when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

Experiencing occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. However, people with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. The excessive anxiety can make you avoid work, school, family get-togethers, and other social situations that might trigger or worsen your symptoms. Often, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). But, anxiety disorders are different, that cause constant and overwhelming anxiety and fear. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and continue into adulthood.

Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment.

What Causes Anxiety Disorder?

Some causes of anxiety disorders are:

  • Genetics. Anxiety disorders can run in families.
  • Brain chemistry. Some research suggests anxiety disorders may be linked to faulty circuits in the brain that control fear and emotions.
  • Environmental stress. This refers to stressful events you have seen or lived through. Life events often linked to anxiety disorders include childhood abuse and neglect, a death of a loved one, or being attacked or seeing violence.
  • Drug withdrawal or misuse. Certain drugs may be used to hide or decrease certain anxiety symptoms. Anxiety disorder often goes hand in hand with alcohol and substance use.
  • Medical conditions. Some heart, lung, and thyroid conditions can cause symptoms similar to anxiety disorders or make anxiety symptoms worse. It’s important to get a full physical exam to rule out other medical conditions when talking to your doctor about anxiety.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

While there are certain common symptoms that accompany anxiety, there are several different types of anxiety disorders you can experience.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is persistent worry about a number of different aspects of your life. You may anticipate the worst in every scenario, be overly concerned about your health, family, work, or money, or simply worry more than an event actually warrants. They may even understand that their anxiety is disproportionate to the event they are faced with, but they cannot control it. Someone with GAD has difficulty controlling their worry on more days than not for at least six months.
  • Panic Disorder(PD) is often diagnosed when a person has an out-of-the-blue panic attack. Panic attacks usually begin in adulthood and happen unexpectedly. To many people, they have similar symptoms as a heart attack – increased heart rate, nausea, hyperventilation, and even tightness in the chest.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder(SAD) is an intense fear of being judged or rejected in social situations. You may worry about stumping over your words or being viewed as boring, awkward or stupid. You may even avoid social situations or have significant anxiety when asked to speak in front of a crowd or go to a party. Even though most people with a social anxiety disorder know their fear is unreasonable, they often feel powerless to fix it.
